The transmission oil pan will generally hold between 3 and 5 quarts of oil, depending on the transmission. However, your transmission probably has a total capacity of 9 to 15 quarts of oil. Performing a transmission drain & fill will usually only change about 35% of the transmission oil. Performing a transmission flush will exchange ALL of the transmission oil, even the oil that was trapped in the torque converter.
A transmission uses oil in the same way an engine uses oil. Modern transmission have a variety of different oil types depending on the needs of your exact transmission, and it is imperative that the correct transmission oil be used. Too many shops will use “Universal Transmission Fluid” without checking to see if it has the proper additives or meets the requirements needed for your exact transmission. We will always make sure the proper fluid is used when doing a drain and fill or a complete flush. This does mean our price may be higher, since sometimes the only place to get the correct oil is the dealership. So make sure you USE THE CORRECT OIL !!!
I can NOT guarantee a used vehicle will not fail in the near future!!!
What is a pre-purchase inspection? More importantly, What ISN’T a pre-purchase Inspection?
Is a pre-purchase inspection a good idea before you buy a used car? Absolutely YES!!! Can a Pre-purchase inspection find all of a used cars faults and guarantee it will not fail in the near future? Absolutely NO!!! Then why bother? That’s the question most people ask. There is a lot that can be learned by a professional performing a pre-Purchase inspection. Has the car been in a bad collision? Was it a good repair job? Are there any codes stored in any computers, and more importantly, have the codes been recently erased in the engine or transmission computer? What do the brakes look like? Are there many fluid leaks? What is the condition of most of the maintenance items? What about the suspension? All of these question and more can be answered by a professional performing a prepurchase inspection.
But why can’t you guarantee there is nothing at all wrong with the car? The short answer is this. One or Two hours is not even close to enough time to check every possibly point of failure. Your next question might be “How much time would you need?” Well, I am not exaggerating when I say it would not be measured in hours, maybe not even days, but rather weeks. The only way to “Guarantee” a used vehicle will not fail in the near future would be to literally check everything against specifications. How can I check the condition of the main bearings or rod bearings without disassembling the engine? Honestly? I can’t. So we are back to the question of “Why Bother spending $150 if you can’t guarantee anything?”
Again, I will give the short answer. A good technician will be able to find the vast majority of potential failures and expenditures due to a lack of maintenance or damage from accidents. Nobody can reasonably find everything, but we can almost always steer you away from a lemon.
